2018 Yamaha Viking EPS SE Review – Yamaha launches the successor Rhino a few months ago, and I received an invitation to join them for the introduction of the press in Wyoming. At first I wondered why in the world would have chosen Yamaha remote location for the press intro. Nevertheless, I packed my bags and headed to the airport for a 5:45 flight.
The trip to Wyoming is not easy. After arriving in Denver on a jet, we downsized to prop regional aircraft for the last leg to Wyoming. It took four more aircraft to get us to the Red Reflet Ranch, but that is a whole other story weather, mechanical and private jet ride.
We arrived at the Red Reflet Ranch a few hours later than we should have, but once there it was nice to relax in the 27,000 acre cattle ranch. After dinner, drinks and an overview of the Yamaha Viking EPS SE, we headed to one of the three guest cabins.
2018 Yamaha Viking EPS SE – Engine
2018 Yamaha Viking EPS SE comes from tried and true 686cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke, SOHC, single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine 4-valve. This machine is a basic platform which has been used for many years in the Rhino, but updated with more power and additional cooling for the Vikings. The good news is 686cc platform durable and proven. But if you are looking for a fast machine or something to play on the dunes, Viking is not a good match.
The Yamaha Viking I drove had the optional Electric Power Steering and this is the only way to go. This system provides a good balance of lightness with positive feedback from the field. EPS systems do a good job in determining the right amount of help in all situations I make it through.
Yamaha Viking EPS And if you have a need seating for three people without going to a dual-row seating, Viking ?? s exclusive pass-through bucket seat has a central position unique off-set the increase comfort with maximum shoulder room for three occupants. And the Vikings have three-point seat belts and headrests for all people.
- The Viking is equipped with Yamaha most powerful 686cc engine with a broad, usable powerband. Four-valve head with 10.0:1 compression delivers optimum torque for virtually any workload, and up to a 30% gain in fuel efficiency.
- Electronic fuel injection ensures peak performance in nearly all conditions and elevations, along with instantaneous cold starts.
- Engine braking performance is provided across the entire speed range.
- Large-capacity air intake system contributes to the engines overall power development.
- New air injection system burns the un-combusted elements in the exhaust, resulting in even further reduced emissions.
- Specially designed drive system air intake helps prevent overheating and assists in keeping water and debris from entering the drive case.
- Convenient dash-mounted gated shift lever (L/H/N/R) provides sim
Yamaha Viking EPS SE Morning came, and after breakfast we were divided into two groups. I was in a group that will take up to 8,500 feet so that we can get a good feel for the features Viking? s. We did a bit of a hike from 5000 and the varied terrain of the road graded to tight, curvy, tree-lined street. This is the kind of trip I think Yamaha had envisioned when they designed the Viking. Not riding the high speed bumps, but more than exploring or hunting adventure.
We headed to the lodge for lunch and then switched places with a group that has used Viking down around the farm to work in the morning. Since we were on a working cattle ranch, Yamaha has arranged for us to be able to use the Viking in work settings. I really appreciate this effort because it is very rare that we could use the vehicle while towing a trailer loaded with a full bed or severe.
The Yamaha Viking EPS has a bed capacity of 600 lbs and we loaded two barrels of mineral ups are probably close to 500 lbs. Yamaha spend some time designing the Viking bearing capacity are adequately represented and that the vehicle was able to handle the weight properly. After loading it, I took a spin around the grounds. While the charge capacity may be as high as some other models, I feel the Vikings did a better job of driving while close ?? its max capacity. To be fair, competitive vehicles may do well with 600 lbs. in it as well, but I felt like it was important to examine what represents manufacturers and Vikings do it well. Only downside is no journey suffers a little when it is empty because the springs are designed to handle more weight. It is always an area of give and take and I think Yamaha did a good job at setting the vehicle to do the job.
We also set up a trailer full of hay that might make us close to 1500 lbs of towing capacity. I drove this setup around the well and the Vikings pulled around like a champ. Clutch and brake handle weight alone. The Viking has a centrifugal clutch maintains constant belt tension so that there is little to no slip and with a system of four-wheel-drive Yamaha, engine braking affect all four tires were good in the steep descent.
